Splash Dance: Paper Piecing Cards

What is paper piecing?
According to Vonda Kirkpatrick at Scrapjazz, "Paper piecing is simply putting together different pieces of paper to form a unique design. Paper piecing, in regards to scrapbooking, entails using different color solid and patterned papers to form eye-catching objects, borders, or designs. It is a fun and creative technique that can be used not only to enhance scrapbook layouts but also cards and gift bags. While paper piecing isn’t a new trend, it is one that seems to be quite appealing to many scrappers and allows them to add a special touch to their layouts."

Melinda Spinks created these darling cards using the artwork from the Splash Dance Collection. Here's the Fantastic Friends Rub-ons she might have used to created her crab and jellyfish.

Remember whether  you are using a paper piecing pattern, scrapbooking embellishments or paper, a coloring book, stationary or some other source, that the original pattern can be enlarged or reduced using a copying machine or your scanner and a graphics program.

Helpful Hints: For shading some scrapbookers use chalks to define the edges. Lining with a black or white pen also helps define the edges of each piece.

If you're interested in learning more about Paper Pieicing, we found a couple of great articles online that cover all the basics.

GIVEAWAY: Would you love to play with the fun Splash Dance Collection? Tell us if you've ever tried paper piecing and what you thought about it and you could win. We'll pick a winner on Monday!

These are so cute. I just paper pieced a flower I stamped for a card last night to make it a 3-D flower. I love to paper piece images.

I do paper piecing every now and then. Not that often, only when I have extra time, as usually I do this when I want to create something that really special. :)

Love paper piecing. You can add so much depth and texture to cards and layouts with it.

I've only done it once, with an older stamp of yours (some crayons). It was very basic and simple, but turned out cute. I'm excited to try more. Thanks for the ideas.

I love paper piecing! I made a layout with a Cozy Coupe with a Teddy Bear that I paper pieced. It took a while but was well worth the effort. It's one of my FAVORITE layouts! You can see it on my blog here: http://mandiesscrappin.blogspot.com/2009/05/scrapbook-pages.html It's the last layout...

I've seen the term 'paper piecing' but was never really sure what it was. I might give it a try now.

OH I LOVE to paper piece and play with shapes too! It is one of those fun projects that is only limited by the imagination. I love to use chalks to enhance all the pieces and I tend to use pop dots too for added dimension. It is a nice way to give a custom look to your projects!

I paper piece all the time-- I do it using fun pattern papers, like the Splash Collection, and with the help of my cricut!

I love paper piecing because after i've cut all the pieces & put them together, the result is always amazing. It is also economical since I still can use my left over papers.

Plus, if you need to improve you scissors' skill, try paper piecing!

I've tried a little....it's more work, but I love the way it looks! You have inspired me to do it more often!

I did some paper piecing on a Chrismas card last year but I used a small stamp and the cutting of all the parts took ages. But my sister loved it and wanted 10 more to send to friends! She didn't get them.

I love drawing my own designs and piecing them together into a card. It's time consuming (not confusing...as I had in my earlier post), but it adds a special detail all my own!!

I had a fishing photo that I wanted to use on a layout. For the embellishment I paper pieced some little fishes that I stamped and cut out. I coated them with a couple layers of crystal clear and hung them by little connecter 'thingies' I found in hubby's fishing box. It made a really cute page.

I did some paper piecing about 7 years ago. There were some pretty neat patterns out there at the time. My favorite was a ocean theme for my daughter's swimming lessons. And even though I no longer do piecing from patterns anymore, I can usually find a lot of it on my layouts. Guess I kept doing it and didn't know it!

I have to admit I am a bit of a paper piecing addict!! I love being able to create whatever embellishment I need and make it to match I am working on! I love to cut up die cuts from my SLICE and or my CRICUT and then layer them to get some great pieces!

paper piecing was one of the very first techniques I learned when I started scrapping 11 years ago! I return to it again and again! I've done everything from a piano keyboard to NHL team logos! But that "Birthday squishes" card is a definite scraplift! It is sooooo adorable!
