Second Verse Same as the First...

Hey there! This is Lisa Day hijacking the blog today! (I have some goodies to giveaway so I'm sure you won't mind!)

When it comes to scrapbooking Birthdays for my kids it feels very much like "second verse same as the first"! (ha, now try getting that out of your head...it's impossible!) My son and daughter's birthdays are only 1 day apart so they end up celebrating and doing everything together. I have decided that since they share a cake, the party, the guest, and even open presents together that I can make the layouts I do for their birthdays follow the same pattern. I can scrap the same topic and even use the same design. It’s actually nice in that respect so I don’t have to recreate the wheel for each layout and I can just get it done!

The
Birthday Bash line made this so easy this year. I love the versatile colors and patterns. Using the same design for each layout – just reversed – I was able to create two quick layouts that still feel very different. The layout I did for my son feels very boyish and the layout for my daughter feels very girlish. It’s fun to make the same layout but still make them unique to fit each child. To me this is an easy way to approach scrapbooking events!

Do you have an approach you take for scrapbooking events? I’d love to hear your take on scrapbooking events. Share your thoughts here and you’ll be entered to win some Birthday Bash goodies
.
Winner will be announced on Monday.

Speaking of winning goodies I have even more to share on my personal blog. Stop over to my blog for an extra chance to win some more Birthday Bash products!

Here’s a look at the two layouts I made, plus a cute little banner I made to hang from their bedroom door on their actual birthday!

These layouts have the same design and even product, but they still feel unique!

I added some pop to the "Happy Birthday" circles on the paper by punching out matching circles and adding some foam squares behind them. I covered a large i-top brad with some fabric and a rub-on to add the birthday year to each layout!

I love how the curve of the celebrate banner and the scallops helps add a soft girly feel to this layout!

I did the same thing on this page and cut out the "celebrate" from another piece of paper and added it to the top with some foam squares. I love the pop it adds!

I can not even tell you how much I love these candles!! I "carefully" burnt the end of each one to give it a more real candle look. I love it!

Okay, don't forget to leave a comment here and hop over to my blog for chances to win 2 great giveaways! Happy Friday!

Great layouts & happy birthday to your kiddos. As for scrapbooking events - I love to get together with others crafty ladies once a month if possible (depending on time & cost of course). I find that I am always inspired by what others are making, and I almost always learn something too! Happy weekend & thanks for a chance to win. :)

Oh very cute! I love how you made them just slightly different. I really like the 3-D letters too.

I love how you did this two pratty and different Lo´s with the same products!! And the banner is awesome too! Love this line, crossing my fingers!!

When scrapping birthdays, I like to use the person's favourite colour at the time ... it usually ends up complementing the photos too because I am also the designated "cake maker" in the family, so I use their favourite colour for the icing colour too! However, I can't make MY OWN birthday cakes, so layouts for my birthdays are never as coordinated as the rest of the family's! LOL

I love the Bday Bash on the layouts. Great job!

I don't really have a certain way that I scrapbook events - I usually looks at the pictures and try to coordinate that way.

I love your two LO's!!! So different yet the same!! It seems like my theme for scrapping events is to get as many pics on a page as I can! I always have do many! Might have to try your simple approach!!

Summer Braxton said...

that banner is delicious!! I don't have much of an approach for scrapping events. I start with a great sketch, find some great paper and go from there.

What a great idea! I just go with whatever hits me at the moment when scrapping events...no plans in sight, lol!

What great LOs.

very cute banner/layouts :)

Love your LOs! As for scrapping events B-Days, Christmas etc. start looking the same and I start to get bored so I take a few of the photos (just face shots or the ones that it is not so obvious where they are) and do something very different with them. They are still scrapped, I'm out of a rut, and you know what who cares if your Christmas pic is done with pink, yellow and butterflies - its done right!!!?!?

great layouts!
eventhough my kids b-days are 4 months away, i think i'm starting the planning NOW!! hehee
Their b-days are 4 days apart, so we just have 1 big party =) SO i usually start with the decorations, banners, hats, balloons, then gifts/cards and then food menu, gfit bags. Of course everything gets photographed.. =)

thanks for the chance to win!

I never thought about using the same scheme for more than one layout. No wonder I get so little done. I am going to try this on some of my summer hiking photos....if I ever get them printed up. LOL

OH, I love the birthday LOs! Thanks so much for sharing!!! The banner is so much fun too!

I just go with whatever pops into my head for that event from looking at the pictures

Melissa said...

Events usually generate a lot of photos, so I pick out one or two of my favorites and scrap those on a pretty LO. Then stick all the other photos in sleeves just behind the LO in the album.

Cute paper! Thanks for the chance to win!

Diana Waite said...

LOVE doing that myself! Especially when all 3 of my kids are in something...Fun layouts!! :)

jeffo 'n lisa said...

I've been doing the "opposits" for many of my layouts. Similar to yours, using two papers and switching them for each side.

Anonymous said...

oooohhh...such cute layouts and banner!!! I *heart* this bday bash line...sigh!!!

anywho, as far as scrapping events...I scrap each of my kids school albums using the same line of pp for the entire year. this makes it so much easier. I will sometimes find another pp or two that coordinates and work it in here and there for the school year. everything (including ALL scraps) stays in my 12X12 iris container until I am done with that particular school year. it is amazing how much I am able to use of a kit or paper pad by doing this. and the best part...I do not spend hours trying to find the perfect paper for a certain photo.

Unknown said...

Birthdays are one of my favorite events to scrap and I take lots of pictures. I really don't have a set plan in place as it depends on the event. But my family is well aware the have to open gifts slowly and smile to camera as I take lots and lots of pictures.

D said...

Love the banner you made!!! Your layouts are too cute too :) When I go to an event, I pack page kits so I don't have to travel w/ too much stuff. I usually end up talking more than scrapping anyway :))))

Deborah Long said...

WHen I scrap events, I always start with the pictures - if there is a single picture that represents the event (like a group photo), I'll usually print it large and do a single page LO. If it takes many photos to tell the story, I'll do a collage or a double page LO, or sometimes even a minibook for the event.

Olivia said...

Lovely layouts :)

Journaling is the most important thing for me when scrapping events so I always start with that & build my design around the feelings I want the page to evoke.

Lori C. said...

I love to capture who was at the special celebration! I like to record any of the traditions or activities that we did. It is also fun to record what food we ate too! I love your birthday line! Thanks for the chance to win! Love, Lori C.

I love the banner for the door and the great use of the i-top on your LO's. My approach to scrapbooking events is to maybe get a few of them done... someday. Sigh~

honestly, i have trouble scrapbooking events such as birthdays. that is why im always in the lookout for ideas just like these pages you did! they're so cute!

Tammy Nyenhuis said...

I love your pages. It's awesome how just changing a few things and the pages gives you a different look. The Birthday pages that I do match whatever theme of the party, I save napkins and plates and find stickers to go with.

Mel said...

This is an awesome idea, and must feel like you have twins, I am thinking this has its benefits, I love how you did the same sketch for both. I always love to get shots of my boy blowing out the candles, and I have to write down in the journalling what he got as it is so easy to forget. Melxx

Super cute layouts! I always have multiple pages of things like my kids birthdays so I try to co-ordinate a bunch of papers that go well together before I start scrapping so that I can have a continual theme! This line is PERFECT for that because all of the papers are sooooo yummy!!!

Janet's Joy said...

I love how you did the same layout but made each unique.
I don't have any specific plan of attack when scrapping celebrations I just start digging through my stash to see what goes with my photos. LOL!

labsuper said...

My strategy on events is to do it right away, while the memories of the event are fresh in my mind.

Jean said...

Wonderful layouts! I do the same thing at the holidays for layouts for my kids about tree hunting and their annual ornaments. I basically make two sets of each but they differ in subtle ways.

Wendy said...

LOVE the rolled candle! so cute! I try to coordinate party decorations as much as I can, along with the kids wardrobes. It makes scrapping so much easier! I also make sure I take pics of everything. I can always delete stuff later, rather than regret not getting the right shot. And I hand the camera off to a few different people, so I can pics from different perspectives, with different people in them too. I've ended up with some really fun and amazing shots!

Awesomerness Jen said...

I just try to find a creative product line that enhances, without overpowering, the subject of the photos.

Kath said...

Love both those pages! I like to do one 'focus' page with a big picture, and then add a matching side with smaller pics from the same event.

Unknown said...

I just love the garland and the layouts! You are so creative!
I don't really have a strategy for scrapbooking events... really I'm probably more of a supplies hoarder then a doer! heeheehee

Unknown said...

Such fun layouts! And the banner is super cute too!! Thanks for the inspiration. :)

Jenni said...

I love how great these layouts work together! Its hard for me to balance taking pictures at events with actually celebrating, but of course it always works out! In the end, the hardest part is deciding which photos to scrapbook. My resolution a while back was to pick the best photos that really showcase the event and not stress out if every moment wasn't captured and documented :)

Pammejo said...

Great layouts, I allow the pictures choose what papers and embellishments I use.

i try to use the colors in the photos on the patterned paper too...to combine them you know?! Your LOs are lovely! i have stepped on your blog...awesome blog BTW!

Sometimes I use pictures of the people at similar events then and now. This is a neat approach for graduations, anniversaries, birthdays, births of different generations, weddings of parents, then a child. . .

i haven't started on scrapbooking and in the midst of learning through browsing the scrapbook blog for inspiration and guidance.

I just returned from the first cropper group that I HELPED ORGANIZE! (whoo=hoo!) We talked about scrapbooking and I said that with ALL family being 600+ miles away, and being the parents of an only child, scrapbooking gives our boy a "history" some thing of family to hold to... it ties him to his family, even the ones far away...so whether it's journaling, or the art of the craft... it's all important, because in a world where a little boy can feel alone...these books and pictures let him know that he is not.

Such yummy colours for this line! I don't have a set approach to scrapping events, I just take the photos, and let them guide me! :) Thanks for the giveaway!

MiamiKel said...

Ohhh you had me at the title, loL! But the layouts were the icing on the cake - beautifully done, super fun and full of vivid colors - gorgeous! Hmmm, for birthdays and scrapping them, I try to take as many candid "Non planned" pictures to really capture the moment, takes LOTS of ones with friends - my kids love to look back on them and say "oh, that's ....!" IT's way cute :) For my crafting, I grab paper to match whatever they are wearing in their clothes! Easy peasy! I pull from that and decorate outward, loL!

Love Birthday Bash! Thanks for sharing 2 for 1 ideas with Birthday Bash! I, too, have 2 girls that are 5 1/2 months apart and they celebrate their birthday on each other's birthday so they have 2 Birthday parties a year = 4 layouts! Phew! I love using the same layout with different papers of the same collection which look so different for each of my girls! Sure would love to win Birthday Bash!

Melanie said...

Love the layouts! I often do the same or very similar layouts for my boys too.

When scrapping events I tend to make one double page layout with tons of smaller photos and then another layout with my fave picture(s) larger.

J. Creations said...

Nice Layouts! I also use foam dots for added interest on my pages.

Great layouts-similar but yet each unique! I like using papers from the same "pack" to create a uniform feel for special events.

My daughter is only 4 so the whole scrapping the party, cake, presents, etc. hasn't gotten old. I've been doing mini books for each one because they're each so different from the last, kids change so quickly!

Great layouts, I like to do similar pages for my kiddos too.

I think my approach it keep it simple (stupid) KISS! and don't be afraid to crop so you can highlight the unguarded moments.

ruth said...

I love to scrap every moment and will do a multi page layout if I have a lot of great photos....often a double page spread. I'm realizing how quickly we forget the details and realizing how awesome it was in years past when I took the time to right everything down.

I made a special album of an annual event my family has been participating in for 30 years at one location and one corner in the city where my DH's father was born. It began last year when I snapped a photo of Vice President Biden hugging his mom!

amazing projects and love that banner! I love to go to crops with my friends...it is so much fun and being in a creative space with others who enjoy the craft, make it easier to be inspired. As for conventions, I just love going and looking at all the inspiring projects and seeing all kinds of goodies to purchase! =)

Iris said...

Usually, I scrap by myself at home in my craft room. I find I get more done that way since I don't have to pack up supplies to take anywhere. And I enjoy having a quiet place to scrap without any distractions. Occasionally, I have scrapped with a group and that is fun too. Thanks for a chance to win. Iris

Jenny McGee said...

Very cute layouts. I love scrapping with a group of friends, but usually I scrapbook by myself. Thanks for a chance to win.

Ms. Jen said...

Cute pages! I run into the same problem with my nieces albums. I try to focus the "changes" on something to do with their individual personalities. Like one likes to read the other likes jewelry so my embellishments reflect that. At least that way you can make it unique to the child even if you are saving time with papers and sketches.

pdrnc said...

Love the idea of making them similar pages. Definitely makes life easier. And also keeps things even. My boys are always keeping score.

Love your idea of making birthday pages that 'match'.....wonder how that would work with a Jan. and July birthday??? I'll have to think about that. I don't have a specific way to scrap events..I like to try out new papers and techniques so it depends on the event, the time of year, and my mood at the time I'm scrappin'!!!

i like to work alone - with thoughts of my subject - and at home - that is where my computer pictures are - and i treat each page as unique. y'see, when i was 14, i got a new baby brother ON my birthday. not fun for a teenager! i had to "share" my day with him for a long time. when mom made me a "ho-ho", my brother got a "twinkie". now, i love sharing my birthday with my brother. in fact, i will actually be able to be with him on our special day...august 19th! he is turning 40, and i will make you do the math on mine! btw...i was the first-born child of 5, and he was the last. thank goodness i had one child's life to scrapbook.

Great layouts and love working with this line! I've done some cards, but now you've given me great layout inspiration too! Thanks!

I mostly go by what they are wearing and then pick the papers and embellies based on that. If the pictures are in color overload I turn them B&W and use whatever color appeals to me on that day. Thanks for the chance to win. Now I'm headed over to your blog.

Melissa D. said...

A technique I use when scrapping events is to take as many pictures as my subjects will allow in order to have at least one pic that I like. Then I try to scrapbook it using embellishments that pertain to them. Thank you for the inspiration!

Nicole Brenna said...

When I scrapbook event sometimes I just do one pic and then sometimes I have so many good ones that I put as many will fit on a page... to date 12 pics is the most pics I have put on a one page layout but I am sure that I will figure out how to put more...heehee thanks for the chance to win great prizes

When I scrap an event I cram as many photos onto the page as possible...that being said. I've learned a lot from this blog and love the clean look of fewer than 12 photos on a page! Thanks!

great idea on the mirrored pages - I generally don't scrap a lot of events

Roberta said...

Great layouts! When I scrap events I just pretty much include them in my scrapbooks like they were any other layout. They'll just be more layouts- one opening presents, ones with the cake, etc- but they're all included in my chronological albums.

mindy gallagher said...

I love the mirrored pages, I actually just did a similar layout for my daughter and my nephew and it turned out super cute. As for scrapping events, I am the family's paparazzi so I always have a ton of pictures that I like to use. I print the best one's big and the rest in smaller sizes and like to make embellishments with them to add to the layout. Like I'd make a film strip along the bottom with the smaller pictures, etc. I also like to make mini albums for events, esp. birthdays! I'll incorporate a layout into the scrapbook, but I'll make a mini album too :D That's about it :)

I have no problem whatsoever doing pages the same whenever I have alot of photos to scrap from one event. Something else I have started doing is just putting the "extra/leftover" photos into divided page protectors and adding them in between or after the layouts in my album. Both work really well for me

AnnaMarie said...

So cute! I don't usually duplicate layouts on purpose (but end up with some similar ones due to my brain coming up with the ideal layout for 3 horizontal 4x6 photos, etc. :)).

For Christmas, I make a pocket page to hold cards I want to keep. I make these pages in advance using my leftover Christmas patterned paper and embellishments. Then it's easy to just put the cards in and move on to the new year!

I have a lot of sports pages to do for my siblings' albums, and while the photos are great of them high-jumping or doing hurdles, you can only scrap so many jumps or races before they look sort of the same. So I wait until the season is over, and do only a few of the repetitive-looking series or photos that have a story to tell.
