Designer-A-Day: Liz Qualman

I guess you could say I have been paper crafting since Kindergarten, but I officially started to scrapbook in the winter of 2007, when I blew out my knee during ski season. While I was recovering from surgery, I decided it was probably time to do something with all of the photos we had amassed of our daughter. I did what every novice scrapper should and joined an online site to learn more about scrapbooking. This was such a great opportunity to make friends with other artists and learn a ton about the industry. Almost 2 ½ years you can find me obsessing over paper, adhesives and embellishments, and Imaginisce has all of my favorite ingredients. I would categorize my style as Cute, Bright, Clean and Sassy, and the collections with this amazing company are just right for the two little stinkers I have at home. I live in the beautiful Rocky Mountains with my family and teach in our local school district. Scrapbooking is my favorite way to channel my creative energy and to share ideas with others.

Design-A-Day: Julie Bonner

Hello everyone!! My name is Julie Bonner & I live in Maryland. I am a stay-at-home mom to my adorable 2 year old son, Ryan, and have been married to my husband, Justin, for 6 wonderful years. I also have three toy poodles that help to keep my household a busy, lively place :) I have always enjoyed preserving pictures, cards, newspaper clippings, and mementos in albums but it wasn't until the birth of my son that I threw myself completely into all the wonderful products & techniques the industry has to offer. I love to use hand-sewing, inking, pen detail, stamping, and distressing techniques to add that perfect touch to my projects - while still maintaining a focus on photos. Scrapbooking has been a gift that allows me to preserve my family's precious memories while providing me with a satisfying, creative outlet. Magnetized Fun!!

I've been told that *magnets* are hot for crafting now days...although I've been creating magnets of all sorts over the years. But one of our talented designers Amy had fun playing with magnets and our Let's Roll Collection. Below each image she explains how she incorporated the magnets.
I first adhered the Compact Vinyl Sticker to white cardstock and trimmed around it. Then I created two car wheels using the large brad daddies and iTop Tool. But instead of adding the brad "back" to the top, I hot glued in a large magnet. I then glued it onto vinyl sticker to hold in place and there's my cute magnetic card sticker.
This cute frame I found at the dollar store (or Walmart) and it fits a 4x6 photograph. But I thought it would be cuter to scrapbook a mini background and add a smaller photo. All you do is slide it into place, tie the Speedy Ribbon around the frame and placed a Speed Bump Sticker Puff just above the ribbon.

I had a little help with these magnets...my 9 year old thought he should help me out. So we took the Go! Go! Go! Chipboard Stickers and stuck them to a magnet sheet we purchased at a local craft store. My son trimmed around the cards and I decided it would be faster to cut around the frame using my xacto knife.

Purple Cows: MOOOO-velous Ideas

The great people over at Purple Cows sent us some of their amazing cutters to play with and Amy created this fun layout with the Let's Roll Collection. If you look close you'll see the fun decorative edge along the light blue cardstock. She used the Freestyle trimmer and just swapped out the blade. She then used the mouse tool and template to create the large circle behind her cute photos.

Let's Roll: Slider Cards

I started with some patterned paper cut to 4 1/8" x 5-1/4", and a darker strip (for contrast with my stamped gingerbread man) that was about 2 1/4" x 5-1/4". Adding a second layer of patterned paper helps to reinforce the spinning track. If you are using a cardstock front, you probably wouldn't need an extra layer unless you want it only for looks.

For the spinning mechanism you will need two pennies and some kind of round dimensional adhesive that will hold the two pennies together. I didn't have any circle foam dots, so I trimmed down a square one and it seemed to work fine. But it needs to be cut as close to a circle as possible to help with rolling. Dimensional glue dots do NOT work because they are sticky on the sides as well--not a good thing when you want the mechanism to spin freely.

Next, using my Stampin' Up Word Window Punch, I pushed the punch up as far as it would go onto the bottom of the gingerbread house paper and punched as closely to the sides as I wanted to go before punching out the center portion too.Pushing it as far as it will go onto the paper or cardstock insures that you can get all three punched areas aligned. (If you don't have a Word Window punch, you can also use a small circle punch at the same height on either end, and cut lines between the circles

Note: Split Coast Stampers has a great tutorial on how to create the slider track from scratch.

To get the spinner mechanism in place, simply push it into one track, and then push out the opposite track until you can gently get it on the other side of the penny mechanism in place. Before putting in the mechanism add a sentiment to this layer if you want one (it's much easier then trying to add it after placing the foam tape on the back of the card). Try placing penny mechanism in the center of the image or you may notice an awkward wobble as the chipboard spins.

In the image below, it shows how I taped the back. I use a doubled stick foam tape (any type will do). I use two layers of the foam tape so the pennies move freely and the spinner can spin properly. As much work as it is, I'd rather add that extra layer of tape and know that it will spin well. I put two long, narrow strips of doubled tape on both the top and bottom of the track to add extra support. The rest of the foam tape is on there merely to attach my card front to my mat layer.

Last, mount the built slider section to front of folded card base (4 1/4" x 5 1/2" finished size).
